The Secret of Essential Oils

Like so many of the ancient methods of health and healing, aromatherapy has been well known to hold such a supportive and essential role in doing just that.

Aromatherapy is considered holistic in nature because the precious oils are extracted from plants. These essential oils are popular in the fragrance that you wear, facial masque, diluted in oils and baths, applied as compresses and used during massages. The oil can be taken orally when prescribed by experienced practitioners using only higher grade levels of certain oils.

It is has been said that fragrance can move the soul. This magic actually has a scientific explanation called the Olfactory System or our sense of smell. When we get introduced to various smells, it has an influence on motivation, mood, creativity, even our autonomic nervous system.  Memory is also influence by smell.  Can you recall when you smelled a flower or someone’s favorite perfume? How did it spark a memory of a certain time and place?

At Hand & Stone, our most popular essential oil is Lavender. Eucalyptus and Peppermint are also essential oils used in our services. Each has unique benefits to assist the mind and body.

Lavender is noted for its relaxation benefits and used in therapeutic baths. Many consider lavender effective as an antiseptic for medicinal purposes or to help reduce headache pain. Lavender is also safe during pregnancy.

Peppermint oil has a stimulating and invigorating effect on the body. It can be used for muscular pain and headaches and can help aid digestion; a good example is peppermint tea. Peppermint is also a common oil used in mouthwashes.

The oil of eucalyptus aids in breathing and actually increases oxygen to cells. It is used as an expectorant and cough suppressant. The balancing effect from eucalyptus is well known for balancing the mind as much as it is known as an antiseptic for the skin. Eucalyptus makes every room smell fresh.

There are so many essential oils to explore, an easy tip… “trust your nose”  it knows which one is perfect for you at any given time.
