Pre & post-microneedling care tips before your session

Before Treatment (Pre-Care)

  • Discontinue Active Ingredients (3–5 Days Prior): Stop using retinoids (Retin-A, retinol), AHA/BHA exfoliants (glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acids), benzoyl peroxide, and vitamin C serums to prevent increased skin sensitivity and severe irritation.
  • Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure (1 Week Prior): Refrain from tanning, prolonged direct sun exposure, or sunburns. Microneedling cannot be performed on sunburned or actively irritated skin.
  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications & Supplements (3–7 Days Prior): With a physician's guidance, pause blood-thinning over-the-counter items such as aspirin, ibuprofen (NSAIDs), fish oil, vitamin E, and ginkgo biloba to reduce the risk of bruising and excess pinpoint bleeding.
  • Pause Certain Facial Treatments (1–2 Weeks Prior): Avoid chemical peels, laser treatments, waxing, depilatory creams, and cosmetic injectables (Botox or dermal fillers) in the planned treatment area.
  • Arrive with Clean Skin: Cleanse thoroughly and avoid applying makeup, perfume, self-tanner, or heavy lotions on the day of your appointment.

After Treatment (Post-Care)

  • Keep the Skin Clean & Hydrated (First 24 Hours): Touch your face only with clean hands. Use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser and apply pure hyaluronic acid or gentle hydrating post-procedure serums recommended by your practitioner.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure & Wear SPF (Daily): Avoid direct sun exposure for the first 48 hours. After 24 hours, apply a broad-spectrum physical/mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) with SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Avoid Harsh Actives & Makeup (3–7 Days): Hold off on applying makeup for at least 24 hours (preferably 48 hours). Do not reintroduce retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C, or facial scrubs until the skin has completely healed.
  • Avoid Sweat, Heat, & Swimming (24–48 Hours): Refrain from strenuous workouts, saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and swimming pools to prevent bacterial infections and sweat-induced irritation while micro-channels remain open.
  • Do Not Pick or Scratch: As the skin renews, light flaking or dryness may occur over the first 3–5 days. Avoid picking, rubbing, or peeling the skin to prevent hyperpigmentation or scarring.

MICRONEEDLING GUIDE

Microneedling FAQ: Everything You Need to Know

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin- and scalp-rejuvenation treatment that uses a sterile, professional-grade device to stimulate your body's own collagen production. Below, Hand & Stone's Estheticians answer the questions clients ask most about how microneedling works, what it can treat, what to expect, and how to prepare — so you can decide with confidence whether it's the right treatment for you.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling — also called collagen induction therapy — is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses a sterile, professional-grade device to create tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. These micro-channels trigger your body's natural wound-healing response, prompting fresh collagen and elastin production. At Hand & Stone, microneedling is performed by trained Estheticians and can be customized for the face, neck, décolleté, or scalp.

How does microneedling work?

During treatment, an Esthetician glides a sterile microneedling device across cleansed skin, creating micro-injuries too small to see. Your body responds by sending nutrients and growth factors to the area and rebuilding new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. This same process also opens temporary channels that allow hydrating serums to absorb more deeply.

What skin concerns can microneedling improve?

Microneedling is commonly used to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and other types of scarring, enlarged pores, uneven texture, hyperpigmentation and sun spots, and mild stretch marks. It's also used on the scalp to help stimulate thinning hair. Results and the number of sessions needed vary by concern and by individual skin.

Is microneedling safe for all skin types and tones?

Microneedling is considered one of the more versatile skin-rejuvenation options because, unlike some heat- or light-based treatments, it doesn't target pigment in the skin — making it a suitable option across a wide range of skin tones. That said, it isn't right for everyone. An Esthetician will review your skin and health history during a consultation to confirm you're a good candidate.

Does microneedling hurt?

Most clients describe microneedling as well-tolerated rather than painful. An optional topical numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area before your session to keep you comfortable, so you should feel only mild pressure, warmth, or a light tingling or prickling sensation as the device passes over your skin.

Is there downtime after microneedling?

Downtime is minimal. Expect skin to look and feel similar to a mild sunburn, with redness and light sensitivity for roughly 24–48 hours. Some clients also notice slight dryness or flaking for a few days as skin renews itself. Most people return to normal activities the same or next day, following an Esthetician's aftercare guidance.

How many microneedling sessions will I need, and how often?

Many clients see initial improvement after one session, but a series delivers the most noticeable results, since collagen remodeling continues for weeks after each treatment. As a general guideline, skin-rejuvenation sessions are typically spaced 4–6 weeks apart, while scalp/hair sessions are spaced 6–8 weeks apart. An Esthetician will build a personalized plan based on your goals during your consultation.

How should I prepare for a microneedling appointment?

Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotion, or perfume. It's best to avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements — such as aspirin, NSAIDs, fish oil, and vitamin E — for about 72 hours beforehand when appropriate to do so, since they can increase bruising risk. Staying well-hydrated in the days leading up to treatment also supports healing. Always tell an Esthetician about any medications, skin conditions, or recent treatments before you begin.

What aftercare should I follow after microneedling?

For the first 24–48 hours, avoid retinol, exfoliating acids, and other harsh skincare actives, as well as hot showers, saunas, and heavy sweating. Keep skin hydrated with a gentle moisturizer and always wear SPF 30 or higher during the day, since new skin is more sun-sensitive. An Esthetician will also give you treatment-specific instructions, especially for scalp/hair sessions.

Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Yes — microneedling is often paired with complementary treatments, such as hydrating facials, LED light therapy, or nourishing serums, to support and extend your results. Because your skin is more sensitive right after treatment, an Esthetician will help you safely time any additional facials, exfoliating treatments, or at-home actives around your microneedling sessions.

Who should avoid microneedling?

Microneedling isn't recommended for anyone with active acne breakouts, open wounds, or active skin infections, or for those with a history of keloid scarring. It's also generally avoided during pregnancy without medical clearance, and for anyone currently using isotretinoin — or who has used it within the past six months — without guidance from a physician. Always share your full health history with an Esthetician so they can confirm whether microneedling is appropriate for you.

How is professional microneedling different from at-home derma rollers?

Professional microneedling uses a sterile, medical-grade device operated by a trained Esthetician, allowing for a more precise, consistent, and effective treatment depth than store-bought rollers. In-spa treatments are also performed under hygienic, controlled conditions, which reduces the infection risk that can come with reusing an at-home tool.

FAQ

Microneedling is an innovative treatment available at Hand & Stone, designed to rejuvenate both the skin and scalp. This advanced microneedling procedure uses a specialized device to create tiny microchannels in the skin or scalp. These microchannels naturally stimulate collagen production and promote healthy hair regrowth, delivering visible results for smoother skin or thicker, healthier hair. Whether you’re targeting fine lines, wrinkles, or thinning hair, Microneedling offers a solution.

This treatment offers numerous benefits for skin and hair, including:

  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles by encouraging collagen and elastin production.
  • Improving skin texture and diminishing acne scars and other types of scarring.
  • Minimizing enlarged pores and refining uneven skin tone and texture.
  • Addressing hyperpigmentation, sun spots, dull skin, and melasma for a radiant complexion.
  • Microneedling can stimulate dormant hair follicles, potentially promoting hair regrowth. However, results vary based on the devices and serums used, and regrowth is not guaranteed.
  • Enhancing product absorption, making skincare and hair growth products more effective.
  • Reducing the appearance of stretch marks and rejuvenating areas with loss of elasticity.

Microneedling is designed for most skin types and hair textures. Whether you’re dealing with fine lines, melasma, acne scars, or other concerns like stretch marks or uneven skin tone, Microneedling is tailored to match your unique goals. Our skincare specialists conduct a thorough assessment to ensure the treatment addresses your specific needs.

For optimal results:

  • Skin rejuvenation sessions are recommended every 4–6 weeks.
  • Hair regrowth treatments are best scheduled every 6–8 weeks.

During your consultation, our experts will create a personalized plan based on your individual concerns and goals.

Microneedling is generally well-tolerated by most clients. To ensure a comfortable experience, a numbing cream is applied before the procedure. Clients often describe the sensation as a mild tingling or slight prickling feeling. It’s effective yet gentle for addressing concerns like acne scars, fine lines, and loss of elasticity.

Recovery is minimal for Microneedling. Expect some mild redness or sensitivity in the treated area for 24–48 hours. Specific aftercare includes:

  • Avoid washing your hair for 24 hours after scalp treatments.
  • Protecting your skin by following aftercare guidelines, such as using sunscreen and avoiding harsh products.
  • Avoid hot showers and saunas for 24 hours

To achieve the best results and minimize risks, follow these aftercare steps:

  • Apply a hydrating serum or moisturizer to nourish your skin.
  • Always use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against sun damage.
  • Refrain from using retinol, harsh exfoliants, or strong skincare products for at least 48 hours.
  • For hair treatments, use recommended hair growth products and avoid chemical-heavy products.

Yes, Microneedling addresses a range of skin concerns, such as:

  • Acne scars and other types of scarring.
  • Fine lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks.
  • Hyperpigmentation, melasma, and sun spots.
  • Uneven skin texture and dullness.
  • Loss of elasticity and enlarged pores.

This treatment provides comprehensive rejuvenation for glowing, healthier-looking skin.

Absolutely. Microneedling pairs well with complementary treatments to further enhance results:

  • For skin rejuvenation, combine with hydrating facials, LED light therapy, or targeted skincare treatments.
  • For hair, pair with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy or specialized hair growth serums.
