What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is an effective, long-term hair removal solution. During the treatments, laser beams pass through the skin and into your hair follicles. This penetrating energy heats the hair root which prevents future hair growth. Each treatment reduces new hair growth.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need to get great results?
Every client is different, and results vary due to personal physiology including hair colour, coarseness and density, and skin tone. We typically recommend three to five sessions for optimal results and to achieve permanent hair reduction. Clinic studies show that women and men who received three treatments—six weeks apart—had an average hair reduction of 81% at a six-month follow-up.

There are three phases in the hair growth cycle—this cycle varies from hair to hair—and laser treatment is effective during the anagen (growth) phase only. That’s why it’s essential to complete your recommended sessions, four to six weeks apart.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal is sometimes overpromised as a permanent solution, but this isn’t exactly accurate. When hair follicles are destroyed by the laser treatment, hairs won’t regrow. But over time, your body generates new hair follicles—this is how new hair growth occurs. However, you should expect a permanent hair reduction of approximately 81%. After your four to six treatments, new hairs will grow slowly, grow in thinner and have a finer texture than before. To target those new hairs and stay silky smooth, we recommend maintenance treatments once or twice a year.
Will laser hair removal work on my skin type and hair colour?
In the earlier days of laser hair removal, the treatment only worked for fair-skinned people with dark hair. Fortunately, technology has advanced, and lasers can remove hair from just about everyone. However, darker hair still responds best to laser treatment because it’s the melanin in the hair follicles that absorb the laser energy. If you have extremely light-coloured hair, the hair follicles absorb less energy, and it may take more sessions to get the best results. Laser hair removal is not effective on grey hair.

Is laser hair removal painful?
Laser hair removal is typically a painless experience. Most clients don’t feel anything at all while others report a tingling or pinching sensation, like a rubber band snapping against the skin. Our laser has a patented cooling device built in, which helps keep you comfortable during treatment.
Is laser hair removal dangerous?
No, laser hair removal is not dangerous but there are safety protocols to follow. We only use lasers approved by Health Canada and our estheticians are trained to keep you safe. For eye safety, you and your esthetician wear protective glasses during the treatment. We’ll walk you through the laser hair removal process from start to finish to make sure you’re completely comfortable.
Who should not have laser hair removal?
Some people aren’t good candidates for laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal is not recommended for people who:
  • Have serious skin conditions, such as psoriasis and dermatitis.
  • Are pregnant.
  • Have a pacemaker.
  • Take medications that increase skin sensitivity to light, such as medications used to treat acne.
Does laser hair removal work with tattoos and piercings?
Adjustments are required for tattoos and piercings. If you have tattoos in the treatment area, we’ll cover them to prevent damage, including fading. As piercings can affect the laser beam, you’ll need to remove any in the treatment area before the session starts.
Can I shave between my laser hair removal treatments?
Yes, shaving is perfectly fine; there’s no need to let your hair grow between appointments. However, do not tweeze or wax while you’re undergoing laser hair removal sessions.
What is the minimum age for laser hair removal?
In most cases, you must be 18-years-old to get laser hair removal treatment at Hand & Stone. But if you’re 16- or 17-years-old, you can receive treatment after you get parental consent.
How long until I see results?
One common misunderstanding is about how long it takes to see results; people think that after one or two sessions, all your unwanted hair disappears for good. This is not the case. Most people require three to five treatments, and the first treatment rarely produces a visible result.

Laser hair removal: Pre-session tips

Here’s how to prepare for your laser hair removal sessions:

  • Shave! It’s essential to shave the area you’re getting lasered before your appointment. We recommend shaving the night before.
  • We recommend that you exfoliate the skin the day before treatment. This will remove dead skin and prevent ingrown hairs.
  • Avoid UV exposure for four weeks before your appointment; that includes tanning, tanning beds, and tanning/bronzing creams. Avoid UV exposure during the treatment period up to six weeks following your last treatment.
  • Avoid irritant topical agents for 2-3 days before treatment.
  • Avoid anticoagulants (blood thinners) for 7-10 days prior to treatment, if medically permitted.
  • Avoid taking a LONG bath or shower immediately prior to treatment. A refresher wipe is provided.
  • Avoid pools (saltwater and chlorinated) / hot tubs
  • An oil-based moisturizer should not be used the day of the treatment.
  • Wear loose clothing if possible.
  • Avoid perfumes on the day of treatment and leave your metal jewelry and accessories at home.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete our health intake form.

Laser hair removal: Post-session tips

  • It is important that you stay out of the sun to avoid UV exposure on all lasered areas after treatment. Use sun protection with a high SPF throughout the course of your treatments. Avoid UV exposure during the treatment period up to six weeks following your last treatment.
  • Moisturizer may be applied after each treatment.
  • If the skin is irritated, apply a cool damp cloth.
  • Make-up may be applied immediately after facial treatment if the skin is intact.

Here’s what you can expect after your laser hair removal appointments:

  • Redness and irritation – It’s totally normal to see redness and/or irritation around your lasered areas. This redness—that may look like a mild sunburn—can last a few days, but usually subsides after a few short hours.
  • The appearance of new hair growth – Anywhere from seven to 30 days after your appointment, you may notice hair growth in treated areas. Don’t panic! After laser treatments, the targeted hairs take time to fall out of the follicle which is why it looks like new hairs are growing. Keep shaving and come back for your next appointment in four to six weeks.
